Modelling your home on an Alpine Chalet
Although the majority of the accommodation in the Alps are chalets they should certainly not be associated with the kind of accommodation that shares the same name in holiday parks around the UK and Europe. Just by looking at the chalets in the Alpine regions of Switzerland, Italy, France and Austria you can tell that they have not been bought as a flatpack from a DIY superstore and nailed together by Bob the Builder, these so called chalets are actual homes. If you visit the Alps in the summer season you will not see the resorts and surrounding areas devoid of activity, in fact far from it.

Alpine Chalet Design
Aside from tourists who favour the region out of season for hiking and camping you will also see builders and specialist craftsmen from all over Europe either renovating chalets or building new ones using a number of methods and materials you can employ on your own property at home. One obvious reason why it may be beneficial to incorporate some methods from chalet craftsmen is obviously the insulation qualities. Utility bills, specifically electric bills are by no means cheap and if you can make a saving by adopting some of the methods used in the Alps it must be worth it. Whether you can build an exact replica of a large alpine chalet in your own locality will probably ultimately come down to planning permission regulations but there is absolutely nothing stopping you from carrying out some alpine style home improvements if feasible.
